How Often Should I Get a Diabetic Eye Exam?

We recommend an annual eye exam for patients living with diabetes. However, every situation is unique, and our optometrists may suggest a more frequent eye exam schedule.

During your exam, we can detect, diagnose, and treat any issues you may have as a result of living with diabetes. Our team is dedicated to protecting your vision and eye health.

What Are Common Eye Diseases Linked to Diabetes?

Diabetes can increase your risk of developing several eye diseases and conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular edema.

Diabetic eye diseases are a leading cause of blindness, and they often show no early warning signs. Living with diabetes can increase the risk of vision loss, but our team is here to help. Through early detection, diabetic eye diseases can be detected and managed to provide more protection for your vision.

Cataracts are a condition that affects the clarity and quality of your vision. Cataracts develop when the lens of your eye becomes more dense and less flexible as you age, resulting in dim, cloudy vision. Diabetes can increase your chances of developing cataracts.

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when the blood vessels in your retinas become damaged due to high blood sugar levels. When this happens, your retinas may create tiny and fragile new blood vessels in an effort to supply oxygen to the retinal tissue. Due to their delicate nature, these new vessels can leak, which can cause vision loss.

Diabetic macular edema occurs when fluid leaks under your macula, causing it to swell. When this happens, it can cause permanent damage to your eye that results in a loss of central vision.

Open-angle glaucoma can occur when too much fluid is produced or insufficient fluid is drained from your eye, leading to increased intraocular pressure. This pressure can damage the optic nerve, causing permanent vision loss.

Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma and your chances of developing it can increase significantly when you have diabetes.

Our Technology

We use a suite of technology to help detect, diagnose, and treat common eye diseases and conditions linked to diabetes. Early detection of diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, open-angle glaucoma, and cataracts can help prevent vision loss.

Optos retinal imaging helps our optometrists take ultra-widefield images of your retina. With these images, we can detect and monitor conditions and diseases affecting your retinal health.

We use fundus photography to capture highly detailed color images of the inside back surface of your eye that include part of the retina, the macula, and the optic disc. These images help us monitor your eye health and protect your vision.

Optovue ocular coherence tomography (OCT) scans are used to take highly detailed cross-sectional images of parts of your eye, including the retina, optic disc, and anterior segment. These images can help our team diagnose and treat diabetic eye diseases and conditions.
