What is Myopia?

Myopia is a common eye condition that results when the eye becomes elongated or the cornea is too steep, such that the image lands in front of the retina. It causes blurry distance vision. Genetics may play a role in the development of myopia. Experts believe that 40% of the US population has some degree of myopia.

Uncorrected myopia can lead to a variety of other issues, like headaches and eye strain.

Myopia in Children

What makes myopia such a focus for optometrists isn’t only it’s prevalence, but also its ability to develop in children as young as 3 years old, and its progressive nature.

When myopia develops in children, it has the potential to affect their learning process and puts them at risk for a variety of different eye diseases and conditions, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration, when they are older.

The best way to manage these symptoms is to ensure your child is having regular eye exams. Optometrists can detect these issues early and help you and your child manage them, as they grow into adulthood.

Myopia Control Treatments

Atropine drops are some of the most common and effective ways to manage the progression of myopia in children. Originally used for pupil dilation, atropine eye drops can inhibit accommodation, thereby controlling myopia.

Your optometrist may administer low-doses of this topical medication, which, in turn, will help slow the progression of myopia. This is often an option recommended for children with low myopia.

Ortho-K (orthokeratology) contact lenses are designed to help reshape the cornea while you sleep, providing crisp, clear vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses during the daytime. Optometrists generally recommend Ortho-K contacts to help manage myopia progression in children and adults.
