Helping You Navigate Vision Loss

Low vision is a term used to describe vision loss that can no longer be corrected with eyeglasses or surgery. If you have low vision, you’ll need to learn to adjust to it through various strategies and assistive devices.

Although low vision is permanent and irreversible, it doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite activities. Instead, you will have to spend time learning new ways to do them. Vision rehabilitation can be effective in helping people cope with low vision.

What to Do When You Have Low Vision

If your vision has reached a point where you can no longer use conventional vision correction methods to see clearly, it can be a stressful situation. It’s important to acknowledge the emotions you may feel when you learn your vision loss is irreversible.

Talking to someone can help relieve any associated anger or frustration you’re experiencing and help avoid mental health problems like depression. There may be some local support groups in your area that can help you on your journey to staying active and making the most of the vision you have.

Some great strategies to adopt include:

  • Don’t isolate yourself
  • Keep any activities you previously enjoyed
  • Keep your job so long as it isn’t dangerous to work
  • Be patient with yourself as you learn new strategies

Detecting, Diagnosing, & Treating Low Vision

If you have low vision, you’ll have significant trouble seeing clearly enough to perform daily tasks. Even with glasses, you’ll likely have difficulty:

  • Using the computer
  • Watching TV
  • Writing
  • Recognizing faces
  • Shopping
  • Driving

If you feel low vision is affecting your life, please visit us for a comprehensive eye exam. We’ll perform a thorough evaluation of your eyes to determine what is affecting your vision and if there are any treatments available to improve it.

We may recommend you undergo vision therapy to help you learn and develop new ways of doing things so you can continue to live life to the fullest. We may also recommend assistive devices, like lights and magnifying glasses, to make your life a little easier. Electronic devices are incredibly helpful with low vision and often have settings that allow you to navigate its functions with your voice.

At Hazleton, Stroudsburg & Pottsville Eye Specialists, we value giving you the care you deserve so you can continue to enjoy your ocular health for as long as possible. If low vision is becoming an issue, please call us for an appointment.
