Photocoagulation is a type of laser surgery that makes small burns around the retinal tear to create scarring that seals the retina to the underlying tissue. Photocoagulation is used to prevent a retinal detachment.
Cryopexy is a procedure that freezes the area around the retinal tear to help secure the retina in place. This procedure helps to prevent a possible retinal detachment.
Scleral buckle surgery is performed by your ophthalmologist, who places a band, called a scleral buckle, around the eye. This buckle helps to bring the wall of the eye towards the detached retina, to keep the retina viable.
During a pneumatic retinopexy, your ophthalmologist injects a gas bubble into the vitreous space of your eye. This gas then helps push the retina back into place. You may be required to lie face down for about a week after the procedure to help the retina take hold.
During a vitrectomy, your surgeon removes the vitreous gel that might be pulling on your retina, to eliminate the traction. Your surgeon may use oil or a gas bubble to hold the retina in place.
