What Is Valeda & How Does It Work?
Valeda uses a special type of light therapy called photobiomodulation (PBM) to gently stimulate your retinal cells. Unlike lasers or injections, PBM is noninvasive, using low-intensity light to:
- Stimulate cellular metabolism
- Increase mitochondrial energy
- Reduce oxidative stress
- Lower inflammation in the retina
This combination can help protect and support your vision in the early to intermediate stages of dry AMD.

What to Expect During Treatment
Simple. Comfortable. No downtime.
Each Valeda treatment session takes under 5 minutes per eye and consists of 4 phases. You’ll be fully awake the entire time. Here’s what you can expect:
- First, you’ll look at gentle pulses of yellow and near-infrared light for about half a minute with your eyes open.
- Next, you’ll close your eyes while a soft red light shines for about a minute and a half.
- Then, the yellow and near-infrared light pulses return for another half minute with your eyes open again.
- Finally, you’ll close your eyes one more time for another minute and a half of the red light.
Throughout the treatment, you’ll simply alternate between looking at the light and resting your eyes with them closed. It’s painless, and many patients find it relaxing.
Symptom Check: Is Dry AMD Affecting Your Vision?
Dry AMD is a progressive condition that affects the macula, the part of your retina responsible for sharp, central vision. Dry AMD can sneak up on you, but regular eye exams give us the chance to spot it early and track any changes before they affect your day-to-day life
It typically develops in 3 stages, and early detection can make all the difference.
Early Stage
Tiny yellow deposits, called drusen, begin forming under the retina. Most people don’t notice any changes in vision at this stage.
Intermediate Stage
Drusen increase in number and size, and you may start to notice mild vision changes. You might struggle a bit more with reading or seeing clearly in low light.
Advanced Stage
Vision loss becomes more noticeable due to retinal cell damage (geographic atrophy) or fluid buildup (wet AMD).
You may experience:
- Wavy or distorted straight lines
- Difficulty seeing in the dark
- Blurry or faded colors
- Blank spots in your central vision

Is Valeda Right for You?
Valeda is made for people with early to intermediate dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), especially those with some useful vision left.
You may be a good fit if:
- Your vision is between 20/32 and 20/70
- You have small to medium deposits (called drusen) in the back of your eye
- You’ve been told you have dry AMD without major central damage
You may not qualify if:
- You have wet AMD
- The damage is in the center of your vision
- You’re sensitive to light or have a history of light-triggered migraines or seizures
Not sure? Don’t worry—our eye care team will walk you through a full evaluation to see if Valeda is a safe and effective option for you.
Valeda Treatment FAQ

What is Valeda?
Valeda is the first FDA-approved treatment for dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It uses safe, low-level light therapy (called photobiomodulation) to help improve vision and slow the progression of dry AMD.
How does the treatment work?
Valeda uses gentle light at specific wavelengths (yellow, red, and near-infrared) to stimulate cells in the back of your eye. This helps:
- Boost cell energy
- Reduce inflammation
- Support healthier retinal function
How long does each session take?
Each session takes less than 5 minutes per eye. It’s a quick, comfortable visit that fits easily into your day.
How many treatments do I need?
A typical treatment plan includes:
- 9 sessions over 3 to 5 weeks
- Follow-up treatment every 4 months to maintain benefits
Does the treatment hurt?
Not at all! Valeda is completely noninvasive—no needles, eye drops, or surgery. Most patients feel nothing during treatment, although some may notice brief afterimages that fade quickly.
How do I know if it’s right for me?
The best way to find out is to book an eye exam. Our doctors will evaluate your eyes and let you know if Valeda is a good option for your type and stage of AMD.
