Cataract Surgery Consultations at Hazleton Eye Specialists

Early symptoms of cataracts can be mitigated with the help of glasses and contact lenses, but as they progress, a common treatment is cataract surgery. If you’ve been told you have cataracts and want to learn more about cataract surgery, we can help.

We’ll determine if you’re ready for cataract surgery and help co-manage the process from start to finish. Cataract surgery is very safe, and 9 out of 10 people report being able to see better afterward.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a common eye condition that can develop for many reasons, with the most common being age and genetics. The common symptoms include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Dull colors
  • Trouble seeing at night
  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Double vision

When you have cataracts, the lens of your eye becomes denser and more opaque. This leads to a cloudy, milky appearance to the lens that can impair your vision.

What Happens During Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery removes the natural lens from your eye and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens matched to your prescription. The goal of this surgery is to remove the cataracts and correct your vision.

A small incision is made in the cornea of your eye to get access to the crystalline lens. Then, an ultrasound device is used to break up the lens before flushing it away with sterile fluids. Once the natural lens is removed, an artificial intraocular lens is inserted.

After the surgery, your eyes will need a few days to heal and you may be required to use some prescription eye drops to reduce inflammation and prevent infection.
