What Are the Symptoms & Risks of Myopia?

Myopia (nearsightedness) is one of the most common vision conditions. People with myopia have trouble seeing objects at a distance. It can develop early in life and typically progresses as children grow.

Some people can experience high myopia, which may put them at a higher risk for other eye conditions, like retinal detachment and cataracts. Myopia control, a method for reducing the progression of myopia, can help children avoid high myopia later in life.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia occurs when the eye becomes elongated or when the cornea becomes misshapen. Because of this change, light lands in front of the retina, instead of on it. When this happens, objects at a distance appear blurry.

People often develop myopia between the ages of 6–14, and it can worsen until their early 20’s. Genetics may play a role in the development of myopia, but anyone can become nearsighted.

Myopia in Children

Generally, children between the ages of 6–14 develop myopia, but in some cases, children as young as 3 can develop myopia. Myopia has the potential to affect their learning process and puts them at risk for a variety of different eye diseases and conditions when they are older, including the complications associated with high myopia.

Taking your child to get routine comprehensive eye exams allows us to detect myopia early, monitor its effects on your child’s vision, and recommend appropriate myopia control methods.

Our Myopia Control Treatments

Myopia control is a form of treatment meant to help slow the progression of myopia development. At Hazleton Eye Specialists, we offer a variety of myopia control treatments, including specialty contact lenses and atropine eye drops.

Atropine drops are a common and effective way to manage the progression of myopia in children. Originally used for pupil dilation, low-dose atropine can relax the eye muscles, which can help reduce eye growth and control myopia.

An optometrist may administer or recommend low-doses of this topical medication. This is often an option recommended for children with low myopia.

Ortho-k (orthokeratology) contact lenses are designed to help reshape your cornea while you sleep. You can experience crisp, clear vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses during the daytime when you wear these lenses at night.

We may recommend ortho-k contact lenses to help manage your child’s myopia progression.
