What Is Retinal Surgery?

Retinal surgery addresses serious conditions like retinal tears and detachments, which can cause vision loss if not treated immediately. If you’ve been told you require retinal surgery, book an urgent appointment with us today. We offer retinal surgery consultations and emergency eye care services to support your vision needs.

We’re Here for You During Eye Emergencies

Eye emergencies can happen for a variety of reasons, but the difference between losing your sight and preserving it depends on how fast you react. If you’re experiencing eye pain, flashes and floaters, or sudden vision loss, contact us immediately.

We’re here to support you if you’re experiencing an eye emergency. We want to help protect and preserve your vision and eye health.

Surgeries for Retinal Tears

Symptoms of a retinal tear include blurry vision, flashes of light, and floaters. Eye injuries, eye surgeries, and posterior vitreous detachment—when the gel that fills your eye pulls away from your retina—can cause retinal tears.

It’s important to repair your retinal tear before it becomes a retinal detachment. Photocoagulation is a type of laser surgery that makes small burns around the retinal tear to create scarring that seals the retina to the underlying tissue. Cryopexy is a procedure that freezes the area around the retinal tear to help secure the retina in place.

Surgeries for Retinal Detachments

If you’re experiencing a retinal detachment, there are surgeries to treat this type of eye emergency. It’s important to treat a retinal detachment immediately because the loss of eyesight can become permanent. Symptoms of a retinal detachment include seeing a lot of floaters, flashes of light, and a darkening of your peripheral vision.

Recovery times can vary for the different procedures. Speak with your surgeon or contact us if you have questions about your recovery.

Scleral buckle surgery is when a band, called a scleral buckle, is placed around the eye. This buckle can help to bring the wall of the eye towards the detached retina so that it can reattach.

During a pneumatic retinopexy, a gas bubble is injected into the vitreous space of your eye. This gas can help push the retina back into place. You may be required to lie face down for about a week after the procedure to help the retina take hold.

During a vitrectomy, vitreous gel that might be pulling on your retina is removed to eliminate the traction. Oil or a gas bubble may be used to hold your retina in place.
