Scleral Lenses & How They Can Benefit You
Certain eye conditions, such as dry eye, can make it difficult for some patients to wear traditional contact lenses. However, there are still options for those who want to wear contacts. Scleral contact lenses are one alternative.
For those with conditions that affect their cornea or those whose eyes are too dry for soft contact lenses, scleral lenses are a choice worth considering. Book an appointment with us today to learn more. We can help you determine if these contacts are right for you.
What Are Scleral Lenses?
Scleral lenses are specialty rigid gas-permeable contact lenses that are larger than traditional contact lenses. They’re designed with a larger diameter, and they sit on the sclera (whites) of your eyes.
Their unique shape creates a space between the cornea and the lens where saline sits. This added saline can keep the eyes moist, increase comfort, and provide relief for patients.
Eye Conditions That Could Benefit from Scleral Lenses
If you experience the symptoms of keratoconus or dry eye, you may be a candidate for scleral lenses.
Keratoconus causes parts of the cornea to thin and bulge, which can make traditional contact lenses difficult to wear. Scleral lenses can help address this problem by providing clear vision without touching the cornea directly.
Dry eyes can also make wearing contact lenses particularly uncomfortable. Scleral lenses can help ease this discomfort with the added moisture from the reservoir of saline fluid contained between the lens and your cornea.
Types of Scleral Lenses
Scleral lenses come in a variety of sizes and are designed to address different eye conditions. The lenses differ based on how much of the eye they cover and where they rest. We may recommend a certain size of lens based on your unique needs.
Regardless of their size, scleral lenses can offer improved comfort for many people living with keratoconus or experiencing dry eye symptoms.
Mini-scleral lenses are the smallest type of scleral lenses available, and rest on the front part of the sclera.
Corneo-scleral and semi-scleral lenses sit in the area between the cornea and the sclera. They are still larger than traditional contact lenses and provide the same benefits as full scleral lenses.
Full-scleral lenses are the largest type of scleral lenses available, and rest directly on the sclera of your eyes.
