LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) eye surgery is the most common laser vision correction performed in America. During the procedure, your ophthalmologist creates a flap in your cornea, providing access to the corneal stroma.
Your ophthalmologist will then use an excimer laser to reshape the corneal stroma to correct your prescription. The flap is then set back in its original position and left to heal.
During PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) the outermost layer of your cornea, called the epithelium, is completely removed to grant access to the corneal stroma.
Your ophthalmologist will reshape the corneal stroma with an excimer laser. After the surgery, your epithelium will heal over in a few days.
RLE (refractive lens exchange) is similar to cataract surgery, but without the cataract. The crystalline lens in the eye is replaced with one that adequately corrects your refraction.
During RLE, your ophthalmologist will create a small incision on the surface of the eye (using a laser or a scalpel) to get access to your crystalline lens. Your surgeon will then break up the lens using ultrasound and extract by phacoemulsification. Once removed, your lens will be replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to provide you with clear vision.
