Dry Eyes in a Nutshell

Two main issues can cause dry eyes: poor quality tears or insufficient tear production. When your tears are inadequate, in quality or quantity, it can lead to red, irritated, and watery eyes.

Poor tear quality and insufficient tear production can affect your tear film, responsible for keeping your eyes hydrated and comfortable. Your tear film has 3 distinct components, each with an improtant role to play:

  • Mucin is the innermost layer of your tear film, responsible for helping the tears adhere to the surface of your eye.
  • Water is in the middle layer of your tear film. This layer is responsible for keeping your eyes hydrated.
  • Oil is found on the outside of your tear film and is responsible for sealing in the other two layers, preventing them from evaporating.

The most common causes of dry eyes are:

Dry eyes can lead to symptoms like:

  • Irritation
  • Blurry vision
  • Stringy mucus or discharge
  • Light sensitivity
  • A burning, stinging, or gritty sensation
  • Redness
  • Watering

Our Treatments

Originally developed for the field of dermatology, eye care professionals have found that intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy can help treat the symptoms of dry eyes, as well.

IPL can help manage the symptoms of inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction. By pulsing light onto your eyelids, your optometrist can help break down and melt away blockages in your meibomian glands that may affect the oil layer of your tear film.

LipiFlow is similar to IPL therapy, but instead of pulsing light, LipiFlow uses heat pulsations to serve the same purpose. The heat helps melt away blockages caused by meibomian gland dysfunction.

Like LipiFlow, MiboFlow uses heat to melt blockages in the meibomian glands. However, instead of pulsations, it uses a constant heat to dissolve the blockages. Most optometrists recommend multiple treatments with this device to manage dry eye symptoms.
