Are Your Eyes Ready for a Change?

You may have experienced this before: after a few hours of working on your computer or playing your favorite video game, your eyes start to become uncomfortable. What begins as mild irritation soon becomes more severe, and you need to stop what you’re doing to find relief.

This irritation isn’t just annoying; it affects your productivity and your ability to enjoy the activities you love. If you think you’re experiencing symptoms of digital eye strain, please book an appointment with our eye care team, so we can help you find relief.

What is Digital Eye Strain?

Digital eye strain is generally caused by doing close-up work for a long period of time, including prolonged use of digital screens like tablets, computers, smartphones, and televisions.

When you’re focused for a long time at one distance, you tend to blink less, compromising your tear film which results in discomfort.

How to Manage Digital Eye Strain

Your optometrist may recommend different ways to manage your digital eye strain. Some of these may include:

  • Changing aspects of your work or home environment to alleviate physical discomfort and dryness. Correcting your ergonomics and adding humidifiers, can help manage your digital eye strain.
  • Using the 20/20/20 rule. This is a very simple rule you can use to give your eyes a break after spending a lot of time doing close-up work. Every 20 minutes, spend about 20 seconds looking at an object about 20 feet away, remembering to blink regularly.
  • Using lubricating eye drops. Please speak to your optometrist before purchasing artificial tears.

The Role of Blue Light

Blue light emitted from digital screens can affect your circadian rhythms.

Your brain misinterprets blue light as sunlight, making your brain believe it’s still time to be awake and active. Studies suggest that blue light has more connections to sleep loss than eye strain because of the amount of time people spend on their devices before going to sleep.
